How to plan photography for a product launch
A launch is one of the few times a brand controls the whole room. The photography should capture the reveal, the story around it, and the people who showed up — ready to publish the same day.
Product launches are fast, tightly scripted, and heavy on brand. Unlike a conference, the schedule is short but the pressure per minute is high — the reveal happens once, and the room is often built around a single hero moment.
Cover three things
- The reveal: the product itself, well-lit hero frames, and the moment it is unveiled to the room.
- The brand moments: stage, backdrop, signage, sponsor walls and any styled set pieces built for the event.
- The guest experience: arrivals, reactions, demos, and the networking that shows the launch was well attended.
Plan for where the images will go
Press outlets need clean, horizontal frames with room for cropping. Social needs vertical and square options. If there is an embargo, agree which shots can be released when. Tell your photographer the exact channels in advance and you will get a gallery that drops straight into each one.
Lighting and timing
Launch venues love dramatic, dim lighting — beautiful in person, challenging for cameras. A photographer who shoots events knows how to hold detail in a dark room without flattening the mood with harsh flash. Build a few minutes before doors open for clean product and set shots, before fingerprints and crowds arrive.
Deliverables
Ask for a small set of hero images turned around within hours for same-day press and social, with the full edited gallery to follow. Confirm licensing covers paid media if you plan to run the images as ads.
